The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants

The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants

Cast: Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn, Jenna Boyd.

Directed by Ken Kwapis, adapted from the book by Ann Brashares.

Story: Four teenage girls share a bond through a pair of jeans that mysteriously fits all four of them.

Running Time: 2hrs.

Certificate PG.

Warning! This is a no-guy zone! Step away all males, you're in danger of buying pot pourri and shoes to match your jacket if you watch this. For the target audience though - namely teenage girls - The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants is the perfect pyjama party movie. For men, it's just Pants.

Michael Rady, playing Alexis Bledel's love interest. Doesn't he look like Frankie Dettori? Being American, the Travelling Pants aren't in fact pants, they're a pair of Levis bought by the four girls that magically fits all of them, despite their variance in height and levels of lard. The friends decide that the jeans should travel with one friend per week during the summer to bring them luck as they go their separate ways. From here on, the story splits into four threads as we follow the four girls as they meet new friends, fall in love and have various family issues. Alexis Bledel was the only one of the four girls that I'd seen before (in Sin City), but all four of them give excellent performances, with young Jenna Boyd providing magnificent support as the pushy little 12-year old who attaches herself to Amber Tamblyn's character.

The four pants sharers, moseying. I'm very aware that I should have been sighing and looking at my watch while watching Pants, being rather far removed from a 14-year old girl. If you promise not to tell, I'll whisper that I wasn't really bored at all - in fact I quite enjoyed it. Having watched it though, I do feel the need to compensate by putting up some dry wall. I will, of course, first have to find out what dry wall is, but I think it'll be worth it to get my bollocks back.

Jenna Boyd, playing Princess Leia. Adaptations of books are often effective because of the depth of plot and Pants is no exception. Apparently the book was a bit of a hit with the kids and the richness of the story is fully and keenly exploited by director Ken Kwapis, who until now was best known for directing some of Malcolm in the Middle and the first two episodes of the American version of The Office. The script wisely steers clear of preaching a message and instead concentrates on telling the story of the pants and the episodes they become involved in, leaving the viewer to make up her own mind.

The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants is aimed squarely at young girls, and will please all but the most petulant of that audience. There's plenty in there for grown women too, but most blokes will need to be dragged kicking and screaming. If anyone tells you that I liked it, they're lying and have bad breath.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5 Chick-flick extraordinaire.

To enjoy this film you should be: in touch with your feminine side.

The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants is on general release in the UK now.
