The Shaggy Dog

The Shaggy Dog

Cast: Tim Allen, Robert Downey Jr, Kristin Davis, Danny Glover.

Directed by Brian Robbins.

Story: A man turns into a dog every now and then. As you do. A remake of the 1959 movie of the same name.

Running Time: 1hr 38 minutes.

UK Certificate U.

Tim Allen, Tim Allen, Tim Allen. His tombstone will read, "I was mildly amusing." The Shaggy Dog is Tim Allen epitomised - inoffensive and warm, just not very funny.

Tim Allen misunderstand's Kristin Davis's request to do it doggy-style. The Shaggy Dog is Disney, and it's aimed at kids - not very old kids. Tim Allen gets bitten by a 300 year old dog, who has some genetic thingy that makes him resistant to ageing, this causes Tim to metamorphose into a sheepdog periodically, which is often tricky for a lawyer in the middle of a case. When not in the form of a dog, he adopts doggy characteristics, such as growling at the baddies, sticking his head out of car windows and feeling an irresistible urge to fling himself at anything thrown in the opposite direction. Cue copious canine comedy. Except it's all very predictable and not all that funny. In fact, you could turn it into a kind of bingo game. Go into the movie with your family, each member clutching a bingo card with your favourite doggy traits on - when each one happens, you tick one off. If you've thought of one that hasn't happened yet, it'll be along in a moment, so it's only a matter of time before your youngest shouts "WOOF!" and, oh happy days, he'll be dragged out and you can pretend he's someone else's brat.

Robert Downey Jr wonders if a sheepdog behaves like a sheep or a dog when backed onto a cliff edge. Tim Allen has made a career out of inoffensive drab-but-likeable Dads and he's fine here. Kristin Davis (Sex and the City) does her usual doe-eyed starey thing, but the real star, other than the dog, is Robert Downey Jr. He's enjoying a renaissance at the moment, with the hugely underrated Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and the Oscar nominated Good Night, and Good Luck, and here he shows more talent, bringing the screen alive and showing the only sparkle in an otherwise humdrum show. Special effects are used for a variety of mongrel species, but curiously they decided never to show the transformation between man and dog - it's always hidden by some scenery. The best we get is a lolling tongue and a froggy-doggy thing that really belongs in A Little Shop of Horrors. Perhaps they thought the budget wouldn't do it justice - but this is a kids' movie, and the kids want to see the freaky bits.

The Shaggy Dog is good clean fun - utter nonsense and fairly uninspired nonsense at that - but nevertheless pleasant and harmless. It'll keep the younger kids entertained for a couple of hours at Easter, but the older ones will be badgering you to see Ice Age 2 instead. And who can blame them?

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5

To enjoy this film you should be: a young child.

The Shaggy Dog was released in the UK on 31st March.
