Revolutionary Road

Revolutionary Road

Cast: Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Shannon, Kathy Bates, Richard Easton.

Directed by Sam Mendes.

Story: Stupid married people making a mess of their lives.

Running Time: 1hr 59 minutes.

UK certificate 15, US certificate R.

Hmmm, so what do we do about this one then? Revolutionary Road is well acted, well written and well made - but it's no good. Tricky.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet discuss what it might be like if they weren't knobheads. Sam Mendes is best known for the sublime American Beauty ... and for being married to Kate Winslet. The characters in that movie weren't having a particularly good time, but it's still a brilliant movie and is totally compelling despite many of the characters being colossal dicks. You could describe Revolutionary Road in much the same way in terms of the characters, but for some reason I don't understand, it doesn't really work. Maybe it's because we have no-one to cheer for - Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are equally odious and self-serving as the troubled 1960s central couple and neither character engenders any sympathy whatsoever. When they start yelling at each other, rather than enjoying the scene (picture Kevin Spacey throwing his dinner at the wall in American Beauty), you just want them to bugger off and bark in someone else's face. There is respite and copious scene-stealing in the form of Michael Shannon, a recovering mental patient who's unswervingly brutal with the hard truth, but it's not enough to lift the overall emotion away from discomfort and weariness.

Despite clearly being an accomplished piece of movie-making, I can't recommend Revolutionary Road to you at all. Maybe if you like watching other people's pain (after all, EastEnders is still inexplicably popular) then you'll get it - but why anyone would want to pay money to watch a movie that's going to make them feel worse, I have absolutely no idea. Avoid.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 2 seconds of boobies (not from Kate), a little language.

To enjoy this film: Take pleasure in other people fucking up their lives.

Revolutionary Road was released in the UK on 30th January 2009.
