Resident Evil: Extinction

Resident Evil Extinction

Directed by Russell Mulcahy.

Story: Alice? Who the f*ck is Alice?

Running Time: 1hr 35 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

Whenever I watch one of the Resident Evils, I expect them to be crap but somehow end up enjoying it. Extinction is the best of the lot.

Milla Jovovich tries to decide between Ant and Dec. It's only the action bits that I ever remember though, so I'm having trouble deciding which bits of this story I can tell you without giving away something new. Best stay safe and say nothing. Milla Jovovich stars again as the athletic shooty girl Alice from the video game series and she shows no less energy here than in the first episode. It's now way into the future, Gordon Brown has long been turned into a zombie making his election plans somewhat irrelevant, and the Scissor Sisters are nothing more than a distant and disturbing memory, because the virus that caused all the commotion in the first two episodes has broken loose and eaten the world, leaving little more than a few Mad Maxy survivors. And Alice. Most of the supporting cast are unknown to me, but you may recognise Ali Larter as the schizophrenic from Heroes (though I must admit I thought it was Jennifer Connelly until the credits rolled!), and R&B star Ashanti doesn't disgrace herself in the company of proper actors.

Ali Larter is ready to pick off whichever one is left. The opening scene has a distinctly James Bond sense to it, with some outlandishly over-engineered booby traps for Alice to negotiate and a room that splits in two to reveal the secrets below - with a table that spans the gap that consequently has to split in two as well ... I can't explain why but I found that tongue-in-cheek detail rather amusing. The director Russell Mulcahy seems to be having great fun messing around with the format, evoking memories of everything from Dawn of the Dead to The Birds. You get the feeling that we're not supposed to take it at all seriously, which is a good thing in my book, as these fantasy tales tend to stretch credulity otherwise. The effects are adequate (well, maybe a touch Blue Peter in places), the acting totally fine and the action pumps the adrenaline nicely - and there are a few scares likely to make you drop your popcorn. It's really rather good.

Resident Evil Extinction won't win any awards, but it's a cut above most of the mindless slashy zombie stuff. For a lads' night out you'll be hard pushed to find a purer action fix and you know what, it'd make a damn good video game.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 5/5 - frenetic action, lots of blood and guts and the now-traditional quick flash of nudity from Milla Jovovich.

Resident Evil Extinction was released in the UK on 12th October 2007.
