Red Eye

Cast: Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, Brian Cox. Directed by Wes Craven. Story: A hotel manageress gets more than she bargained for on a simple internal flight. Running Time: 1hr 25 minutes. Certificate PG.

Another Wes Craven flick - he's really pumping them out. Cursed was only a few months ago, but then I guess if they're as routine as Cursed, you can do several in a year. Red Eye does have a degree of creativity to it, but not nearly enough to mix it with this year's bumper cinematic crop.

Red Eye stars two travellers who sit next to each other on a night-time flight across America. Rachel McAdams (from Wedding Crashers) is a professional hotel manageress, her sinister flying companion is Cillian Murphy, from 28 Days Later and Batman Begins. Both deliver competent performances, though at times Murphy's acting is a little flabby. Given that the meat of the movie takes place within the confines of an aeroplane cabin, it's surprisingly easy to stay focused, thanks to the immediacy of the situation and the fact that the plane is full of unsuspecting passengers who could get involved at any time. Once the plane is dispensed with, things become a little farcical and not even the ever-dependable Brian Cox can steer the sinking ship from the rocky and inevitable conclusion. It's reasonably entertaining on the way, but no more than that.

Red Eye is an average potboiler and is not a bad way to spend an hour and a half - but that's not much of a recommendation when you could be watching Crash instead. Average in every department, Red Eye is not going to win any awards, but is worth a try if you've seen everything else.
