Night at the Museum

Cast: Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Carla Gugino, Dick van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs, Ricky Gervais, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan. Directed by Shawn Levy. Story: Museum exhibits come to life at night. Running Time: 1hr 49 minutes. UK Certificate PG.

Night at the Museum is the Christmas blockbuster, the one to take the family to. It's no masterpiece, but it certainly goes some way to fill the void of decent live action family movies.

Well, I say live action - a fairly large proportion of it is CGI though. When the story consists of a tyrannosaurus skeleton running around, with lions and mammoths and the like clawing at the actors, there's not much choice. Ben Stiller is the unfortunate night watchman at the Manhattan Museum of Natural History, somewhat surprised when the exhibits come to life at night, thanks to the tablet of Um Bongo, or some such nonsense. This opens up a whole load of fun roles for the stars to enjoy - including Robin Williams as a waxwork Teddy Roosevelt and Owen Wilson as a mini cowboy figure fighting against the next-door display cabinet race led by Roman centurion Steve Coogan. None of it holds together terribly well, but it's all jolly good fun so it doesn't matter too much.

It's a good job the stars and the special effects are up to the job, because director Shawn Levy, based on his previous form (Cheaper by the Dozen, The Pink Panther), could use some more practice. Given the quality of the stars and the pensionable talent available, it seems strange to pick Dick van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Bill Cobbs (the poor man's Morgan Freeman) as supporting security guards, and even stranger to give van Dyke almost pantomime levels of makeup. The three of them pale away amidst their somewhat more flamboyant surroundings, as does Carla Gugino (Sin City), fulfilling the obligatory love interest without it ever actually happening. The story is perfect trailer material, but runs out of puff after the brilliant first half hour, requiring a few extra plot band-aids to keep it going. It's not too intrusive, so it's acceptable.

Night at the Museum is great family fodder, but it's not worth a trip to see on your own. It's ideal for viewing through a sleepy alcoholic haze after a dinosaur-sized Christmas dinner.
