Miami Vice

The remake train rumbles on - next stop, cheesey 80s cop show with big name actors, taken deadly seriously. This one could go any number of ways.

Hey, watch it with that camera, I nearly walked right into it. Director Michael Mann has brought us some cracking movies in the past, most recently the dark and brooding Collateral, and he was heavily involved in the original popular TV series. He certainly knows how to do cool and dark, but Miami Vice was never known for its depth. Mann rehires two of his Collateral stars - Jamie Foxx as Tubbs and jazz hit-victim Barry Shakabar Henley as the cool boss man, and Colin Farrell joins the party as linen shirted Sonny Crockett - Don Johnson with credibility. The names are the same, but much has changed. They still steam around in that undercover cop's favourite (!) Ferrari - but it's an F430 Spider now, instead of the Testarossa - so white it could have worn a medallion - and the whole coolness factor has been brought bang up to date.

A nice inconspicuous Ferrari for undercover work. Mann's feel for a nocturnal city is pervasive again and provides the lasting memory - more than can be said for the heavy-handed dialogue and similarly clumsy lead performances from both Farrell and Foxx. At the very opening of the movie, we're dumped straight into a vice operation - there are, unusually, no opening credits - and it's a couple of scenes later before we realise it's not a spoof, and I'm not totally convinced that the actors knew any better. Once on the movie's wavelength, it should've improved, but sadly that's far from true. The plot is so predictable that it could actually be an episode from the series itself, and the acting is so average that it's a genuine effort to remember what, if anything, actually happened. The heroes get by on bravado rather than guile, the love story is achingly shallow and the entire mish-mash, save for the wonderful visuals, is all distinctly ... well ... 80s. And, crime of crimes, there's no sign of that rocking Jan Hammer soundtrack that made the series so distinctive.

Miami Vice is a shadow of the movie it could have been. Dumping the best bits of the TV series and keeping the duffers is not a smart move. Michael Mann's flair for mood saves it from being a total fiasco, but I can't recommend it on that alone. Poor.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - Naomie Harris shows some skin in the shower - enough to satisfy the leches and not enough to offend the censors.

To enjoy this film you should be: curious.

Miami Vice was released in the UK on 4th August.

The original series had a definite 80s style and has had its day, being relegated, as far as I know, to only the cable/satellite channels in the UK. So what better a moneyspinner than to bring this popular series into the 21st century?
The dialogue is downright incomprehensible in places and frustratingly too fast and brief, like every second of screen time was precious, only to waste several minutes on a meaningless dance or sex scene. I'd have to watch it again to catch all the plot development, but this film doesn't merit a reviewing. The action scenes are the best feature to this film.
Any number of sequels could follow, but I doubt I'll be shelling out for a ticket.
