The Matador

The Matador

Cast: Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear, Hope Davis.

Written and directed by Richard Shepard.

Story: An experienced hitman befriends a timid businessman.

Running Time: 1hr 36 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

Nicely made but curiously named, The Matador will suffer from its misleading moniker. This is a shame, as it's one of Pierce Brosnan's best movies to date.

Greg Kinnear and Hope Davis watch a particularly harrowing episode of Spongebob Squarepants. Brosnan is no stranger to the role of trained killer, but this gunman is a little different. He's at the end of his career and suffering from mental problems that seriously affect his murderous capability. When a drunken meeting with unassuming salesman Greg Kinnear in Mexico spawns an unlikely friendship, Brosnan shares his unethical troubles in the symbolic surroundings of a bloody bullfight. Director Richard Shepard casts a wily eye on proceedings, making Brosnan a lethal but vulnerable anti-hero in an environment of unorthodox humour and compelling plot developments. Without resorting to action-packed gunfights, The Matador effortlessly holds the attention with its sharp script and sassy delivery from its leading man. Greg Kinnear struggles to keep up, veering towards theatre-style exaggeration on occasion but nevertheless the two friends play nicely off one another. Hope Davis, who must be the busiest supporting actress in Hollywood at the moment with her stints in Proof and The Weather Man, steals much of Kinnear's glory as his spunky wife, again highlighting Kinnear's failings, but to the overall benefit of the movie.

Pierce Brosnan - you can tell by the way he uses his walk he's a woman's man. The Matador smacks of a low budget movie - it lacks a little polish in places - but like so many low budget movies, the lack of easy solutions leads to a heavy reliance on the script and characterisations - and as a result they're very good. The dialogue is full of punchy and amusing asides and the characters, although not as rich as they could be, are hugely watchable and perfectly judged. The details of the story are often very heavy-handed, but in a fun way - you need to be on its side and let it do its thing - but it's such an amenable movie that it's very easy to do that.

The Matador is light and pleasant, despite being about killing people for money, and will fit nicely into a gentle evening's viewing. It's not substantial or tight enough to warrant a second visit - you'll start seeing the faults if you do - but I urge you to remember the name and give it a go if you get the chance.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - Very little in the way of gunplay or action. Some very quick anonymous breasts in a brothel scene and an exploding Porsche. Plentiful profanity.

To enjoy this film you should be: into quirky movies.

The Matador is released in the UK on 3rd March.
