Manderlay

Manderlay

Cast: Bryce Dallas Howard, John Hurt, Danny Glover, Willem Dafoe, Isaach De Bankolé.

Written and directed by Lars von Trier.

Story: A bunch of slaves on a plantation try freedom.

Running Time: 1hr 59 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

Manderlay is the weirdest movie I've seen in a while. Shot like a school drama lesson, it's pretentious yet intriguing and certainly unlike any other movie in existence.

Bryce Dallas Howard and Willem Dafoe try to avoid awkward eye contact after they realise that neither parent was ginger. Manderlay must be the lowest budget movie since Buster Keaton was too young to fall off a train. The whole movie, although set within a cotton plantation, is shot within what looks like am aircraft hangar. The floor is uniformly beige up to the walls, which are black, giving the impression of a void beyond the set. The lighting is clumsy and harsh, completely unlike the open-air setting it's supposed to represent. There is minimal scenery, maybe the odd windowframe and a drawing of a tree here and there to represent the real thing, while the rest is imagined. The actors wave their hand in the air in a knocking manner and lo, a knock sound eerily appears. Character number two then pretends to open a non-existant door and the dialogue begins. It's most peculiar and quite ridiculous. For the first twenty minutes or so I was agog, completely bewildered at how I'd come to be watching such amateur and hopelessly pompous nonsense ... and then the strangest thing happened. I started to warm to it. I stopped noticing the writing on the floor and the off-set oblivion and started becoming involved in the story. And it turned into quite a good movie. You could have knocked me down with a feather. Well, maybe a hammer.

Danny Glover wonders who stole the rest of the scenery. Manderlay is a tale of slavery. Bryce Dallas Howard (the blind girl from The Village and daughter of Happy Days' Ron Howard) is the rich kid of Willem Dafoe, dropped into the Manderlay plantation at the death of the boss woman, briefly played by veteran star Lauren Bacall. Despite being 70 years after the abolition of slavery, Manderlay is still run by slaves, who are now reluctant to join the free world. Howard steps in and takes over, teaching the ex-slaves about democracy and business along the way. Sounds bollocks, doesn't it - but all credit to director Lars von Trier, it sucked me in and wouldn't let go. The impressive performance from Bryce Dallas Howard helped, and the fact that she got her kit off - but don't let that sway you. If you go just to see a ginger minge you could end up very bored before it happens. Yes, we may see more of her than anyone but a doctor or intimate partner should, but it's not a very erotic scene - you'd be better off catching the stills from our good friends at the Ministry of Skin. However, if you can stand the bizarre stylisms then you may find yourself having a good time after all.

Manderlay will not have a big following. Its weirdness will put most people off and the subject matter of racism, slavery, politics and plantation management will put off even more - but for the few viewers that can hitch a ride on it and see where it goes, they'll find plenty of interesting content to think about. There's a little gem hidden under there somewhere.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 2/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 3/5 - Bryce Dallas Howard proves she's a natural redhead and some of the gentlemen slaves let it all hang out too, if you're into that sort of thing.

To enjoy this film you should: like trying new things.

Manderlay is released in the UK on 3rd March.
