The Last King of Scotland

The Last King of Scotland

Cast: Forest Whitaker, James McAvoy, Gillian Anderson, Kerry Washington, Simon McBurney.

Directed by Kevin Macdonald.

Story: Idi Amin hires a doctor.

Running Time: 2hrs 3 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

The Last King of Scotland is this year's token African story for the Oscars to recognise, and it's a pretty good story to boot.

Forest Whitaker learns the YMCA dance enthusiastically, and one arm at a time. Forest Whitaker is always watchable, and his Idi Amin is no exception. The Ugandan tyrant was a nasty piece of work, but as with most successful despots, his charisma outshone his bloody hands. It was no surprise to see Whitaker's name on the list of Oscar nominations last night, and he'll probably win it. His accent did noticeably slip once, but the sound quality stumbled at the same point, so I think that line was probably redubbed - meaning we've got the sound editor to blame for that one. James McAvoy (Tumnus the faun in Narnia) continues his assault on the big time by contributing another deep and rich performance as the newly qualified doctor who stumbles into the job of Amin's personal physician, leaving fellow volunteer Gillian X-Files Anderson to heal the villagers on her tod.

James McAvoy and Dana Scully agreed with the crowd - Take That aren't the same without Robbie. Things start out well for the doctor, Idi Amin seems like such a nice bloke. Things couldn't be further from the truth though, with McAvoy slowly coming to a painful realisation of quite how much of a nutter his new boss is. The trend culminates in a scene of such graphic violence that it's almost impossible not to look away from the screen - if you've seen Richard Harris in A Man Called Horse, you'll be familiar with the moment. Its impact is all the more powerful since the first half seemed so fluffy - it's like a stray cat who's been nuzzling at your nose for the past month before you discover why your toothbrush has been "a bit yellowy" lately. This easy opening makes it far more accessible than, say, Hotel Rwanda, giving it a far wider audience and more general appeal.

The Last King of Scotland is a great tension builder. Beautifully acted and skilfully directed, I urge you to give it a go, particularly if you don't usually like movies based on world events. It's good enough, trust me.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 5/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - random African boobs and some really nasty violence.

To enjoy this film you should be: ready to look away at the icky bit.

The Last King of Scotland was released in the UK on 12th January.
