Jarhead

Jarhead

Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx, Peter Sarsgaard.

Directed by Sam Mendes, adapted from the book by former Marine Anthony Swofford.

Story: A new recruit joins the Marines for the Gulf War.

Running Time: 2hrs 3 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

Jarhead is a war movie. I hate war movies. Sam Mendes directed American Beauty. I love American Beauty. So where does that leave Jarhead? It leaves it as an almost unprecedented achievement - a war movie that I like.

Jamie Foxx and Jake Gyllenhaal reconstruct one of the weirder Gulf War moments. What makes it different? Because it's human, it's told from the blinkered perspective of the grunt and there isn't a whole load of gratuitous violence and dismembered limbs. It's a story that happens to be set in the Marine Corps, like a Marine wrote a book about his experiences that was made into a movie. Funny that. It's an approach that, under the skilled control of Sam Mendes, is extremely effective and completely believable. It combines the realism of soldiering with sharp scripting and amusing horseplay, all of it acted, directed and edited with world class talent. The scene where a TV crew interviews the marines, for example, is a masterclass in minimalism and stands out for its character. Jake Gyllenhaal shows his class in these scenes too, graduating to the big league with this and Brokeback Mountain. The Day After Tomorrow seems like a long, long time ago. Jamie Foxx already made it big last year, with Collateral and Ray - this year all he's had is the juvenile Stealth but I'm pleased to report he's back to form in a top quality movie.

Jarhead is a bit special, being a war movie that doesn't have a load of bang-bang action - I loved it. It's maybe a little too dark and poignant for some, but most men will consider it well worth the price of admission. Possibly not one for the ladies, though.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - very brief boobs from Brianne Davis, 278 uses of f**k or a derivative (so I'm told!), lots of macho Mariney malarkey. For the ladies, Jake Gyllenhaal's arse makes its appearance more than once.

To enjoy this film you should be: male.

Jarhead is released in the UK on 13th January.

I think the book by Anthony Swofford will read better than the film views.

The film Jarhead is a marine's story from the rather comical memories of boot camp, through a long boring holiday in the desert followed by a breif (which is all Desert Storm was) military conflict. Some people are raving about this film and I suppose it works from a crunts POV as it plays on the senses in much the same way as Andy McNab's books do!

However, the film did nothing for me!! The acting was good it's the story that lets it's down. True life stories need to be told in a better way.

I don't need nor do I want movies to try to explain to me via the memories of someone else how and why a young man fights to discovers what a cruel, destructive business life can be, surely we all know that and we goto the cimemea for some escape. Jarhead has it's hero (for want of better word) almost going AWOL in boot camp before becomming an excellent sniper, enter main story the Gulf. He comes out of the conflict that had already been won by jets and smart bombs (see CNN), he returns home to find his girlfriend has left him and to rub salt into this festering wound his best friend dies from a possible suicide. If we need to see films like this what has existence come to? I agree that Mendes does a good job of portraying all of this but the story itself sucks!!
