Superhero Year continues anabated, with Edward Norton carrying on where Eric Bana left off - and it's a
much more traditional affair.
I think I was the only one who liked Ang Lee's Hulk back in 2003. Of course, since he's gone on to make critically
acclaimed stuff like Brokeback Mountain, most critics forget the panning they gave him
back then. Much as I liked the original though, I have to confess that this one's better. Louis Leterrier is a superb
director, responsible as he is for the love-it-or-hate-it Transporter 2 and the quite
brilliant Unleashed / Danny the Dog, and he brings a freshness to the tried-and-tested
superhero formula that we've all seen a dozen times before.
The story starts off pretty much where the old one ended, with Edward Norton as the Incredible Banner hiding away in the
slums of Brazil trying not to let anything piss him off. It's a little while before someone makes him angry - and sure
enough, they don't like him that way. William Hurt, who's one of those actors who's very highly respected in the industry
but not terribly well known to the public, does his recognisability no harm at all as the hard-nosed commander chasing down
the big green one and Tim Roth (burger bar holder-upper in Pulp Fiction) is memorably unhinged as Hurt's man in the field.
Predictably our Hulk has to go up against a brand new threat who's conveniently just a bit harder than he is (sigh), but
the story of how this happens is much more believable than usual so I'll forgive the laziness. Just don't let it happen
again.
It's an all-action affair this time round, which would normally rob any movie of a fifth star, but I enjoyed it so darned
much I'm going with the maximum rating anyway. The effects are effective (as is their wont) without being class-leading
and Leterrier's influence, particularly the bit with the helicopter, is enough to make it feel new. Look out for another
security guard cameo by TV-series Hulk Lou Ferrigno, looking much less dead than I remembered, and wait for the epilogue
where they let us in on their plans for the next movie ... although the clues are there in the very first scene if
you're paying attention...
The Incredible Hulk is a completely satisfying actiony blockbuster. Totally non-celebral and unashamedly brash, it
really is great fun. I loved it.
I enjoyed this film: 5/5
I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5
Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 3/5
To enjoy this film you should be: a fan of traditional superhero movies.
The Incredible Hulk was released in the UK on 13th June 2008.
