Well, at least you know what you're getting. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay is a stoner's comedy - and mildly amusing for the rest of us.

John Cho and Kal Penn would never have done the crime if they'd known they'd have to do the time in orange. The first movie, called either Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle or Harold and Kumar Get the Munchies, depending which side of the pond you're in, brought a new sharpness to the stoner comedy and was genuinely funny. Escape from Guantanamo Bay can't recapture that edge, relying instead on a series of disjointed set-pieces that I'm sure were pure comedy gold through the green haze of the creative process, but seem rather uninspired in the cold gloom of Odeon Basingstoke after having had the life sapped from our veins by half an hour of adverts. Granted, there are several chuckles along the way and Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser) pleasingly reprises his manic version of himself that stole the first movie, and there's a very warming "bottomless party" that must have had the censors scrabbling for the red pens, but none of that can hide the fact that it's only moderately funny.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay is quite good fun. It's harmless and rather charming, it's just that it could do with making us laugh more. The first movie's better.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 4/5 - the nudity quota is more than satisfied, continuous pot smoking, references to cock-meat sandwiches. Although it all seems harmless fun, you probably don't really want your kids to see it. Which is ironic, because they'd love it.

To enjoy this film you should be: partial to the odd puff yourself.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay was released in the UK on 30th May 2008.
