Gran Torino is, supposedly, Clint Eastwood's last screen appearance. Let's not let
sentiment cloud our judgement though - it's pretty good, but it's not his best.
Nowadays he's more leathery than his orang-utan Clyde and has a higher waistband than
Simon Cowell, but he can still cut a mean
figure on the screen. Steadfastly holding out as his neighbourhood becomes
increasingly filled with Asian Hmong immigrants, superficially racist Clint finds the next-door kid trying
to steal his precious Gran Torino as a gang challenge. Ah, but this is Modern
Clint, he can't be a bigot for too long, it's not The Done Thing any more. Cue
the tetchy bonding and old-dog-new-tricks that we know so well. Sheriff Eastwood
directs himself to good effect, and he even manages to get passable performances
out of the rest of the non-actor cast, but even so it's pretty clear that there's
only one professional on the screen. It's never a good sign when a movie's UK
release is more than a month after the US one, and Gran Torino waited double that.
They knew it was only average.
Whilst perfectly watchable, Gran Torino is nothing special, largely due to the
complete lack of electricity beyond the main character. It's poignant to think
that this may be Clint's last screen role (and for this reason it's actually his highest
grossing movie ever), but that's no reason to make a trip to the theatre.
Catch it on the telly - as a TV-sized movie it's actually very good.
I enjoyed this film: 4/5
I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5
Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 3/5 - whilst there's very little Clinty action,
we can still enjoy his arthritic macho posturing.
To enjoy this film: forget Clint's past.
Gran Torino was released in the UK on 27th February 2009.
