The Devil Wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada

Cast: Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Adrian Grenier, Simon Baker.

Directed by David Frankel.

Story: A style novice becomes the PA for a hard-nosed fashion magazine editor.

Running Time: 1hr 49 minutes.

UK Certificate PG.

The Devil Wears Prada is a chick flick - but it's more polished and accomplished than your usual production line romantic comedy. Don't tell anyone, but I quite like it.

Meryl Streep's hair feels the sudden urge to sniff another hair's bottom. Anne Hathaway (The Princess Diaries, Ella Enchanted) didn't stick out her bad-girl phase (Havoc) very long. In The Devil Wears Prada she stars as a fresh-faced temp sent to work at the offices of Runway magazine, edited by the impossibly demanding Meryl Streep. The rest is pretty predictable, but the way it gets there is fun - largely because of the three stars helping Hathaway make up for a rather ordinary performance and irritating twang. Meryl Streep is predictably strong, but the surprises come with the supporters Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt, who are both exceptional. Stanley Tucci is rapidly becoming one of my favourite actors after his various eclectic appearances in movies such as The Terminal, Lucky Number Slevin and Shall We Dance and he's beautifully measured here as the camp fashionista who befriends Ms Hathaway. Emily Blunt may well be a new name to most of us, she's an English talent who is pleasingly about to explode into Hollywood after a strong performance in the festival favourite My Summer of Love. She's marvellously acerbic in Prada, teetering on the edge of parody without ever crossing the line.

Emily Blunt reacts to supermodel Gisele Bundchen's acting ambition. These performances are the movie. The script, although quite amusing in places, is only magicked into this humour by the talented delivery. The main plot developments are telegraphed in true chick-flick style, but at least there are some minor moments of character development that are somewhat less obvious and even touching - moments that would have fallen flat without decent performers in charge. Director David Frankel, more famous for his TV work (Entourage, Sex and the City) than his limited and anonymous movie work, does a decent job with his excellent cast, setting The Devil Wears Prada well above the standard fem-film and into the crowdpleasing market instead. The stark, brash lighting of the Runway office creates a lasting memory, much more so than the drabness of Hathaway's everyday life with hoi polloi boyfriend Adrian Grenier, which is far more humdrum and forgettable.

The Devil Wears Prada manages to find a place for itself at the top of the charts thanks mainly to the talent of its stars (Anne Hathaway excepted). Aimed at women but good enough to entertain the less laddy blokes too, it deserves its moment on the catwalk.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5

To enjoy this film you should be: female or a man who's realised there's more to life than football and shooting furry things.

The Devil Wears Prada was released in the UK on 6th October.
