Deck the Halls

Deck the Halls

Story: Two neighbours feud about Christmas lights and in the process learn the meaning of *BLEURGH* ... sorry, just threw up a bit there.

Running Time: 1hr 32 minutes.

UK Certificate PG.

Lord save me from Christmas movies. Deck the Halls has stinker written all over it, from conception to overpriced popcorn. A Christmas lights feud between neighbours is the kind of awful idea that would need someone like the Coen brothers to pull it off - however, Deck the Halls was entrusted to the monkey who previously infected our lives with Big Momma's House 2. Somebody stoke the furnace, it's roasting time.

There's never a falling airliner when you need one. Can anyone remember a decent Matthew Broderick movie since Ferris Bueller's Day Off? The Producers was one of the worst movies of the year and I can scarcely believe that his career has actually gone downhill from there. Following all the tritest formulas and successfully avoiding anything close to quality movie-making, Deck the Halls epitomises all that sucks about the consumerist excesses of Christmas. What makes it worse is that pretty much everyone in the movie used to have some degree of coolness. Everyone knows Broderick from Ferris Bueller, Danny de Vito scored points for Get Shorty and Throw Momma From the Train, Kristin Davis was in the chic Sex and the City and even the kid - Alia Shawkat - had already been dipped in Arrested Development's kudos before suffering this contagion. They're all unclean now.

The house too gaudy for Jordan. I really want to find something good about this movie, simply because I was expecting it to be so dire from the outset that I feel I should compensate. Try as I might though, I can't. The story's shit, the direction's shit, the editing's shit and the "action" sequences are the worst I have ever seen. Period. The kindest thing I can think to say is that the script has a couple of lines that could be described as acceptable, if you're feeling generous. The idea of paying to see this herpes is quite a revolting thought - Christ, even Santa Clause 3 looks good next to this. However, as with all movies like this, there are some viewers who will inexplicably love it - and if you're the kind of person who hangs tinsel on your cat, you may well find it worth your perusal. God, I feel dirty for saying that.

Deck the Halls is spectacularly awful in every respect. It's as if Hollywood has a competition for the worst family Christmas movie - this one's in the lead so far and I sure hope it wins.

I enjoyed this film: 0/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 1/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5 - you might be tempted to start a fire just to get out of the cinema.

To enjoy this film you should be: inexorably drawn to crap Christmas movies.

Deck the Halls was released in the UK on 1st December.
