It's not often these days that I get to say I'm too young for something, but I was a wee nipper in 1975 when
Death Race 2000 emerged, and it's exactly the sort of movie I would've hoovered up if I'd been old enough.
Death Race is the modern version, and it's great fun.
Jason Statham is the ideal choice for this kind of role - he's already been a tough-nut driver in
The Transporter and slips easily into the driving shoes of the wrongly imprisoned star.
Win a televised urban race, says the Governor, and you'll walk free. What ensues is almost a direct screen conversion of
video games like Carmageddon, or if you're an Amiga veteran like me, Super Cars. The cars drive over icons on the floor,
just like in the games, and obtain weapons to use against their rival protagonists. It's all very silly indeed, but at
the same time it's enormously satisfying, thanks to the non-CGI approach - yes, that's REAL stunts - and they're
spectacular. Director Paul W S Anderson knows a thing or two about this kind of movie, having done Resident Evil and
Alien vs Predator, and he's an expert at pressing the right buttons of a petrolhead audience. And he's already made
Spy Hunter, due out next year...
Death Race is not a trailblazing classic like the original, but it does exactly what it sets out to do, in great style.
You won't persuade your girlfriend to like it, so go with the boys instead.
I enjoyed this film: 4/5
I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5
Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 4/5 - more oily action than you can shake a
stick at, sadly no nudity though. Times have changed.
To enjoy this film: remember the original or be in the Playstation generation.
Death Race was released in the UK on 26th September 2008.
