Cloverfield

Cloverfield

Cast: Michael Stahl-David, Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, TJ Miller, Mike Vogel, Odette Yustman.

Directed by Matt Reeves.

Story: Manhattan disaster movie.

Running Time: 1hr 25 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

Great trailer. You know, the one where the Statue of Liberty's head rolls down the street. Nothing makes you want to see a movie more than the promise of Manhattan being destroyed, just look at The Day After Tomorrow. Cloverfield is, pleasingly, somewhat better.

The new ice-tarmac proved tricky at pub chucking out time. I have to admit though, the opening's sooo very tiresome. For such a relatively short movie, an awful lot of it is wasted setting the scene, all followed through the eyes of a camcorder as some bloke has a party to celebrate him going away. This bit is WAY too long and boring, which will have you hoping that something catastrophic happens to New York soon. Fortunately, it does, and then the movie starts. Surprisingly (for me, at least), the movie is entirely shot from the camcorder, with the viewer knowing nothing more than our intrepid band of fleeing partygoers, Blair Witch stylee. It's a brave idea, and it brings with it one huge advantage - the CGI doesn't have to be fantastic in order to look spectacular, because the whole movie's camcorder quality anyway. Consequently everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, looks 100% real - and considering the level of devastation wreaked on NYC, that's a very impressive achievement.

Superman distracts even the poster in the background. That's about all you want to know before you see it. If you read any other review, they'll tell you what's caused the destruction, and I reckon you're better off letting the movie tell you that. Not that the movie has all the answers - the ending in particular is very unclear in that respect and leaves some fairly fundamental questions unanswered. However the telling of the story - what we get to see of it - is extremely compelling and will have you gripped from beginning to end. There's even scope here for a kind of non-sequel - a re-telling of the same story from someone else's point of view. I hope in the sequel they still use no-name actors - it wouldn't have been the same with Tom Cruise.

Cloverfield is a refreshing new attempt at the tried-and-tested disaster movie, and once it gets going it really works. The tedious opening and unresolved ending lose it a point, but the atmosphere on its own is plenty enough to recommend to any disaster or action movie fan.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5
