The Break-Up

The Break-Up

Cast: Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Joey Lauren Adams, Cole Hauser, Jason Bateman, Vincent D'Onofrio.

Directed by Peyton Reed.

Story: A couple break up and stay living together. Inspired.

Running Time: 1hr 45 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn in a romantic comedy. Hands up who thinks it's going to be good? Anyone? Well, you're right. It's very, very ordinary.

Vince Vaughn tries to understand why Jennifer Aniston is interested in him. Tell us when you find out, Vince. You know Vince Vaughn, right? He's the fast-talking tall guy who started out in Swingers, became annoying in Be Cool and found safer ground (and another five stone) in Wedding Crashers. Believe it or not, he's actually going out with Jennifer Aniston, for real. In real life. Jennifer Aniston, who was previously with Brad Pitt. Vince Vaughn, that huge lump of lard who can only wear bowling shirts and thinks he's funnier than anyone else does. How does this come about? I have a theory. After making The Break-Up, I think they watched the finished product and realised that never in a million years would a woman like Jennifer Aniston go for a draught excluder like Vince Vaughn. What are they to do? Well, they can start going out for real, like her former beau did with Angelina Jolie after Mr & Mrs Smith, then we'll have to believe them, right? Oh, how manipulative these Hollywood types are. And then they throw in a rumour about Aniston getting naked in it, just to bag the horny schoolboy vote. Well, boys, you do get a quick peek at her arse, but that's it. More transparent propaganda.

Jon Favreau can't figure it out either. So does it work? Well, I can't say it does. Even looking past the unlikelihood of the pairing, Vaughn's character is pretty annoying. His trademark rapid-fire arguments are actually physically tiring to listen to, so in the end I started zoning out whenever the verbal fisticuffs started. And who wants to watch arguments for an hour anyway? I'll never understand why movies like this contain so much bickering and conflict, when they're supposed to be fundamentally feel-good movies. You see people fighting, you don't like them. These guys go at it so much that I really couldn't give a toss whether they got back together or not, I just wanted them to STOP ARGUING! Aniston herself is actually pretty good, but you have to look hard to see that within the unsatisfying script and lame story. Supporting actors Jon Favreau (Very Bad Things) and Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) are far better, as is often the case in these formulaic romantic comedies, but it's not nearly enough to save what is, at best, average, production line tosh.

I really can't recommend The Break-Up. If you don't see many movies then you're far more likely to enjoy it, but if you've seen more than half a dozen rom-coms this year then I doubt you'll find anything to merit the price of a ticket. Perhaps worth a rental for a quiet night in front of the fireplace with a loved one.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - Jennifer's peachy bum is nice to look at.

To enjoy this film you should be: on a date.

The Break-Up was released in the UK on 20th July.
