On the TV, Borat is somewhat hit-and-miss, concentrating exclusively on Sacha Baron Cohen's tried-and-tested formula of
behaving badly in front of uptight foreigners in the hope that they take him at face value. There's plenty of that in the
movie too, but it's surrounded and tied together by a loose story, which is every bit as funny as watching New Yorkers run
away as he tries to kiss them. It's hard to tell how much is genuinely spontaneous and how much is set up with actors,
but it's all uniformly hilarious - it's such a glorious change to watch a movie that's so consistently funny, so
unashamedly silly and such raw good fun. Whilst superficially mocking pretty much any group - Jews, gays, women -
in reality he's knocking the knockers. I've no idea how Cohen had the balls to pull off all the real-life situations -
allegedly he had the police called on him nearly 100 times during filming - but the movie benefits from his courage.
