Basic Instinct 2

Basic Instinct 2

Cast: Sharon Stone, David Morrissey, David Thewlis, Charlotte Rampling, Flora Montgomery, Indira Varma.

Directed by Michael Caton-Jones.

Story: Sexy thriller sequel - is Catherine Tramell a serial killer? Again?

Running Time: 1hr 54 minutes.

UK Certificate 18.

Although somewhat overshadowed by the infamous leg-crossing scene, the original Basic Instinct was actually a pretty good movie. Now, 18 years on, presumably after all the kids she spawned in the first movie have moved out, there's a sequel. Hands up who expects it to be any good? No-one? Yes, you're all right, it's pretty rough.

David Morrissey notices Sharon has some plastic caught in her shirt. Oh no, hang on, that's her tit. Paul Verhoeven, the director of the original, comes in for a lot of stick in the press (he also did Starship Troopers and Showgirls), but there's no denying he makes entertaining movies. This sequel is so drab and uninspiring that if it wasn't for Sharon Stone in the lead role, you'd be forgiven for thinking the two movies were completely unrelated. For a 47 year old (as she was at the time of filming), the shop-bought boobs are holding up nicely under the movie lights and she's undeniably sultry - but the cheekiness and vulnerability she injected into the first character is entirely missing here, leaving only a callous shell, and a less convincing one at that. The plot doesn't help things, with Ms Stone driving footballer Stan Collymore into the river in the opening scene, destroying a perfectly good Spyker C8 Laviolette in the process. She gets away with his murder, but curiously the London police don't seem bothered about the drug offences or dangerous driving she freely admits to - and there's not a Gatso in sight.

Charlotte Rampling discovers quite how comfortable it is leaning back on Sharon since her surgery. David Thewlis, one of the aforementioned Metropolitan coppers, is clearly the best thing in the movie, donning a Welsh accent and getting in the single use of the C word that seems obligatory in today's thrillers. David Morrissey is a peculiar choice for the lead role as he lacks weight and charisma and he struggles to retain some presence during Stone's pushier moments. Most harmful to the movie's prospects though, I suspect, will be the lack of nudity. Sure, there's some - Flora Montgomery and Sharon Stone both get their knockers out - but it seems most of it has been left on the cutting room floor. For a franchise whose notoriety depends on a snatch of fur in the original, that seems to be a spectacularly bad idea and will leave a lot of horny teenagers wanting their money back.

Basic Instinct 2 is a pale shadow of the 1992 original. Clunky plot, average acting and an inexplicable lack of skin leaves me wondering who on earth this is aimed at. My basic instinct is to recommend you watch the original again.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - not nearly as much nudity as the makers would have you believe. Sharon Stone's surgery is holding up well though. David Thewlis says c*nt once early on, Ms Stone talks frankly about sex throughout.

To enjoy this film you should be: unable to stay away.

Basic Instinct 2 was released in the UK on 31st March.
