There Will Be Blood

There Will Be Blood

Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano.

Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

Story: Oil mining in the late 1800s.

Running Time: 2hrs 38 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

There Will Be Blood, eh? Crikey, you'd think it was a vampire movie. What it is, in fact, is a powerful story-driven award-seeking movie about oil mining that's been nominated for eight Oscars. Talk about a misleading title.

Daniel Day-Lewis thought he was auditioning for Davros. It seems to be the year for quiet slow-burners. No Country For Old Men and The Assassination of Jesse James are both of this ilk, movies you have to immerse yourself in to get the most out. None will work as a background movie, flickering in a dusty corner of a living room - they require viewer involvement. Daniel Day-Lewis's central performance makes that a whole lot easier, captivating as he always is. It's a complex character he portrays, an oil miner trying to build up his family business whilst not being too heinous to the people whose black gold he's chasing. He doesn't always get that bit right, as you will see, but Day-Lewis's talent means we always stay with him until the bitter and uncomfortable end.

Never go swimming near an upturned tanker. Now here's a thing. I was surprised to see a 15 certificate attached to what seemed to me to be a cut-and-dried 12A movie. It turns out that it was in fact originally certified 12A, but the distributors asked for it to be increased! Not that I can imagine a single 13 year old being even vaguely interested, once they figure out the promise of blood is rather optimistic, but it's unheard of for a certificate to be raised at the request of people whose interest lies in its widespread distribution. Perhaps they were worried about lawsuits from the parents of kids who were bored to death.

Fortunately for us grown-ups, we enjoy the things that make our kids fidgety, and there's plenty to enjoy. The story is unpredictable (I read it completely wrong) and the scenery is very atmospheric. The battle between the rational but ruthless oil man and the nutty but powerful local church barmpot keeps a thread of dark conflict throughout the story, and with two equally flawed combatants, it's never clear which way the axe is going to fall. Or if the axe even exists.

There Will Be Blood perhaps doesn't have the zing of the other Best Picture contenders, so I think it'll miss out there, but it is nevertheless a worthy and solid movie that is hard to fault, and well worth catching at the cinema. Oh, and there is some blood after all, if you wait long enough.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5 - 12A would've been fine, there's nothing but light swearing.

To enjoy this film you should: require no shooting and car chases.

There Will Be Blood was released in the UK on 15th February 2008.
