Lars and the Real Girl

Lars and the Real Girl

Cast: Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, Kelli Garner Patricia Clarkson.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, written by Nancy Oliver.

Story: Simple chap has relationship with blow-up doll.

Running Time: 1hr 46 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Chances are you haven't seen this one - a relationship with a blow-up doll isn't the most attractive topic for the big screen - but it's really, really good. No seriously, it is.

(L-R) Paul Schneider, Emily Mortimer, Ryan Gosling and Bianca McPlastic. She's rubbery. Ryan Gosling was amazingly good in last year's Half Nelson and he's at least as good in this completely different role: Lars, a lonely chap with social difficulties whose new "girlfriend" turns out to be an inflatable sex doll. It's hard to know where to go with a start like that, but director Craig Gillespie pulls it off in spectacular fashion, which is all the more impressive when you consider his only other directorial credit is the vastly different Mr Woodcock. Through brief jocular moments that are both light and dark at the same time and with a sensitive and believable storytelling style supported by an excellent Oscar-nominated screenplay, Lars and the Real Girl comes together to become one of the best movies of the year.

Lars and the Real Girl is a talkie - but it's one of the best. Top notch performances, direction and screenplay combine to make it a truly world class movie, and it warms the cockles too.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5
